Job Description:

The Opportunity:

The Brechner Center for the Advancement of the First Amendment provides research, advocacy, resources and training on critical issues related to free speech and freedom of information. The Center is housed in the College of Journalism & Communications at the University of Florida, #5 ranked public university.

We are seeking an Education/Training Specialist to focus on outreach. In this role, you will be educating students, the public, journalists, and government officials in access to government information. Looking for someone with strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a culturally diverse environment.

Key duties:

  • Public education and outreach in freedom of information (FOI).

  • Coordinate Sunshine Week Conference (mid-March) and create training/educational materials as needed.

  • Coordinate the Sunshine United Network year-round toward promoting the right to know, building collaborations in the field, and measuring impact of education and outreach activities.

  • Develop and oversee online education and training materials, including online courses and website resources, as well as educational materials provided through newsletters and other channels.

  • Participate actively in professional organizations or conferences.

  • Serve as the lead on new initiatives or as coordinator for large training programs.

  • Translate, or oversee translation, of educational materials into Spanish and other languages.

  • Provide online and in-person training for journalists and the public, including at conferences. Promote freedom of information, Brechner, and the College through working exhibitor tables.

  • Coordinate, promote and lead online Zoom workshops in access to public records and other topics.

  • Assist with other education and outreach communications for the Brechner FOI Project.

  • Create content and consistently and frequently post to Brechner and Sunshine Week social media channels.

  • Oversee promotional activities for Brechner.

Expected Salary:

$60,000 - $70,000 annually

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and six years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Strongly Preferred:

  • Journalistic writing experience and proficiency

  • Experience in marketing and social media

  • Event planning skills

  • Experience with data collection and analysis

  • Energetic and charismatic

  • Potential to be an engaging speaker

Nice to have:

  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred, writing and oral, for training and translation of educational materials in Spanish.

  • First Amendment/open government advocacy

  • Master’s degree (or Ph.D. or J.D.)

  • Teaching/training

  • Course development
