DEPARTMENT OF STATE HEALTH SERVICES Epidemiologist II in HARLINGEN, Texas

Job/Position DescriptionThe Epidemiologist II will be cross trained in aspects of epidemiological conditions, participate in epidemiologic investigations, including interviewing patients, analyze and gather data and the resulting recommendations for disease control and the creation of outbreak survey forms and reports. Plans, develops, collects, and conducts epidemiological studies; performs data analysis; interprets and disseminates disease and morbidity data. The position engages with partners and serves as a consultant on public health matters through education and training in areas of surveillance data and disease reporting. May assist in the collection of epidemiological specimens. May assist with bioterrorism, emergency response planning, COVID-19 response and other infectious disease prevention and mitigation.The Epidemiologist II works under the Regional Epidemiologist. This position participates on a rotating after-hours and holiday on-call schedule and as a member of the Epidemiology Response Team (ERT). Position is embedded in the PHEP/EPI team and assists in developing effective relationships and networks of communication to promote teamwork and collaboration in implementing public health emergency response activities.The ideal candidate would have experience working with public health work in infectious disease epidemiology and surveillance.All DSHS employees will receive an automatic increase in annual salary of $3,000 or 5%, whichever is higher, effective September 1, 2024 per the 88th Texas Legislature. This is a temporary position and expected to last up to May 31, 2024. There is no guarantee this position will be extended beyond what is indicated in this job posting. Upon hire, the selected candidate will be required to sign a Temporary Employment Agreement indicating awareness that the employment status of the position is temporary.Essential Job Functions(40%) Analyzing Data and Report Development:Coordinates the preparation, design, and compilation of epidemiological reports. Prepares and presents epidemiological and disease prevention information; Participates in conducting educational programs on major public health issues.; Assists with community assessments and implementing mitigation strategies to reduce public health impacts or risks; Develops educational materials and implements training for health professionals and the public.(30%) Epidemiology and Surveillance:Conducts regional surveillance for notifiable infectious diseases. Investigates naturally occurring disease outbreaks, immediately reportable disease conditions and bioterrorism events; Reviews disease and laboratory reports to identify reportable conditions and ensure data meets the established disease case definitions; Investigates communicable disease surveillance reports and monitors and improves surveillance procedures; Reviews medical information, including labs; Completes investigations; Collects and enters data into disease surveillance databases.
