Description

The Public Safety Officer Level III/IV is under the direct supervision of the Public Safety Officer Level IV or V. The Public Safety Officer Level III/IV supervises the day-to-day operation of their assigned shift. The Public Safety Officer Level III/IV acts to protect persons, property, prevents fires, theft, vandalism, disorder and damage to college property. The Public Safety Officer Level III/IV helps the Public Safety Officer Level IV or V in creating monthly work schedules and makes daily shift assignments. Provides leadership in emergencies, trains and mentors new and experienced officers provide a first level of disciplinary documentation/action when needed. The Public Safety Officer Level III/IV will assume the position of Officer in Charge of the shift, below are minimum responsibilities of the Officer in charge of a shift.

This is a Public Safety union position as stated in the Public Safety collective bargaining agreement

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Attend and complete to standard all assigned departmental training.

  • Be able to work in a paramilitary structure with a well-defined chain of command.

  • Arrive on time and properly attired for assigned shifts (applicants may be required to wear a uniform).

  • Be available for shift and weekend work and assignment to all campuses and centers.

  • Record and report information concerning complaints and refers it to shift leaders.

  • Issue traffic tickets and/or warnings for violations of traffic/parking regulations and policies.

  • Patrol corridors, parking areas and roadways. Direct traffic as assigned.

  • Assist college population with jump starting, vehicle unlocking and personal escorts to vehicles as assigned.

  • Provide emergency medical treatment (to level of certification).

  • Be able to complete reports of incidents and fill out work-related forms.

  • Work indoors and outdoors, sometimes in extreme weather conditions and temperature.

  • May be required spend extended periods standing, walking and climbing stairs. Must be able to maintain a vigorous working pace.

  • Answer telephones and communicate using portable radios and base station radios in compliance with department and FCC standards.

  • Assist persons on campus.

  • Operate department identification card equipment, issue ID cards and parking stickers.

  • Have good interpersonal communications skills and the ability to work as a team member.

  • Keep work-related topics confidential.

  • Be exposed to verbal and possible physical abuse by irate persons.

  • Perform all Desk Officer duties without supervision.

  • Assume Officer in Charge duties in the absence of a Senior Officer.

  • Assist in training newly-hired officers.

  • Ability to review required reports and advise officers on corrections.

  • Acts as a field training officer for newly hired officers.

  • Can work independently with little or no supervision.

  • Is knowledgeable of college and department policies and procedures.

  • Assist in preparing duty schedules.

  • Assists in planning special events.

  • Perform any other assigned tasks as necessary.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education Required:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience Required:

Six months of work experience as a Rowan College at Burlington County Public Safety Officer, or six months of previous documented experience in the public safety field i.e.; police, fire, EMS, safety, etc. (civilian or military).

INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS:

Collaborates with department members and/or the Compliance, Assessment and Research team to support planning, assessment, data collection and reporting for continuous improvement of the college.
