HOURS:

This is an Overnight position. Typical hours are Monday - Friday from 11pm - 7:30am with alternating Saturdays.

PURPOSE OF JOB:

The Senior Specimen Processor research and resolve special submissions from clients. Specimen Processors are responsible for processing the majority of samples that comes into the department. Specimen Processors are required to keep inventory of samples after testing has been completed by scanning them into storage racks. They will also be required to search the lab for any samples not scanned into storage racks. May be cross-trained to perform basic Laboratory Technician or Lab Aide duties. May be responsible for various support activities, including maintaining supply inventory, record-keeping, cleaning, clerical tasks, supply shipping and receiving, mail distribution and other related duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Receives and prepares samples for distribution to main laboratory.

  • Removes specimens from transport bags and splits as needed for multiple testing.

  • Retrieves and prepares add-on's and rechecks.

  • Accurately process Avian/Exotic, manifest and problem specimens at a rate of 40 accessions per hour.

  • Accurately process standard requisitions per approved procedures at a rate of 72 accessions per hour, heartworm multi-test forms at a rate of 150 accessions per hour, fecal multi-test forms at a rate of 150 accessions per hour, and 2-D requisitions at a rate of 90 accessions per hour.

  • Records information about specimens. Label and numbers slides, specimens and submittals. Enters specimen data into database, scan tubes, process ZLOOK, and other post production duties as required. Verifies accuracy of information.

  • Verify samples are in correct locations.

  • Complete Add Log/recheck specimens in a timely and thorough manner.

  • Assists Leads/Supervisors with training.

  • May be required to assist other lab personnel with specimen storage

  • Sort samples for distribution throughout the lab (X-rays, Coggins, cytology, etc.).

  • Ensure Turn Around Times (TAT's) are met.

  • Reads, understands and follows applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), including safety and quality procedures. Maintains clean and organized work area. Restocks supplies as needed.

  • Participates in improving lab efficiency, quality and cooperation.

  • May be responsible for various support activities, including maintaining supply inventory, record-keeping, shipping and receiving, cleaning and other related duties. Checks inventory of supplies, stocks shelves and maintains order in stockroom. Ensures documents are completed according to established SOPs and reflect current manufacturing processes and label claims. May assemble equipment as needed. Prepares and ships supplies, including processing related documentation. Performs variety of administrative duties, such as answering and routing incoming calls, maintain temperature logs and other related activities.

  • Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology and specimen processing procedures and equipment helpful.

  • Work under close to moderate supervision with limited latitude for independent judgment.

  • Consult with senior peers on processing tasks to learn through experience.

  • Normally receives general instructions on routine work, detailed instructions on new assignments.

  • Basic skills with moderate level of proficiency.

  • Applies job skills and lab policies and procedures to complete a variety of tasks.

  • Works on specimen processing tasks that are semi-routine in nature without deviating from SOP’s is required.

  • May be asked to participate in enterprise initiatives, special projects, and other duties as assigned.

  • Reliable and dependable attendance is an essential function of the position.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and work experience required, preferably in Science-related field.

  • Typically 3-5 years related work experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Laboratory skills and experience helpful.

  • General science background, including hematology/chemistry helpful.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Organized with ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Positive, can-do attitude.

  • Basic math, interpretive and analytical skills.

  • Strong Data Entry skills required (Minimum 6,000 KPH)

  • Personal computer skills, including strong typing ability and proficient use of Microsoft Office.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Extensive sitting, phone, and computer use

  • Capable of standing continuously for up to 2 hours

  • Extend and reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers

  • Occasionally required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel or crouch

  • May be required to lift, move, and carry up to 50 lbs.

  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Hearing ability to effectively communicate via the telephone and in person

  • Ability to communicate verbally on the phone and in person

  • Fluency in the English language

  • Extended hours may be required

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Laboratory environment with potential biohazards present.

  • Potential for exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease in humans and use of potentially hazardous chemicals as defined by the National Hazard Communication Standards. A complete list of such chemicals is available from department supervision.
