NBC Universal Senior Art Director, Entertainment USJ in Orlando, Florida

SUMMARY: Responsible for the overall design, vision, development and execution for all new entertainment elements and marquee projects are effectively produced at Universal Studios Japan (USJ). Ensures the project’s “story” and creative intent is conveyed visually and successfully for a diverse portfolio of Entertainment projects including but not limited to Christmas, New Years, Universal Cool Japan, Halloween, Seasonal décor, limited-time attractions, and Special Events. Responsible for bringing the creative intent of a project to life in concept illustrations, scenic elevations, design packages depicting the creative intent of the various projects.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Directs show and attraction seasonal and rotating overlay conceptual design and development projects throughout USJ. Executes innovate design solutions for marquee overlay projects produced including but not limited to all Live Shows, limited-time attractions, and parkwide decoration packages through final design packages for presentation for defined client expectations and USJ standards for localization and design style.

  • Participates in a collaborative environment with the Creative Directors, Show Producers, Technical Directors, and project teams to develop and direct creative design intent that meets project creative, business, technical, and operational objectives. Manages design calendars and project schedules to meet required timelines. Ensures project completion of documentation of art and finish specifications, materials specification, and design drawings and key participant in cost, schedule, technical, integration and other design and entertainment requirements.

  • Manages the Entertainment Creative team to drive all concepts and designs for new projects and reoccurring entertainment elements in concept design and development. Directs day to day work assignments to the design team during all phases of the project, including production and installation, in a manner that meets the project design intent, schedule and budget. Initiates and organizes design reviews as often as needed during the process. Oversees the design efforts of external resources and vendors ensuring they capture the design intent and USJ standards.

  • Establishes, builds, and maintains positive and productive team relationships based on open communication, trust and teamwork with project partners, departments, disciplines, and personnel. Communicates, inspires, and maintains project intent among all Team Members. Acts as project liaison for appropriate internal and external partners, licensors, and intellectual property developers.

  • Understand and actively participate in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UDX policy, procedures, training, and team member involvement activities.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

  • Experience and knowledge of creative processes, proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, 3D software, and media production.

  • Must have the ability to be flexible with changing work initiatives, coordinate multiple projects and multi-task efficiently within a fast paced and high-pressure environment while meeting strict deadlines.

  • Must be proficient in AutoCAD with strong skills in 3D modeling software such as Revit, 3ds Max, etc.

  • Must be detail-oriented with excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Self-starter that can problem solve autonomously and in group settings; ability to evaluate administrative creative challenges and provide credible and achievable solutions.

  • Experience with popular Anime and/or Horror properties a plus.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Theatrical Design, Art or Film is preferred.

EXPERIENCE: 7+ years of relevant experience in Theatrical Design and Theme Park Design Execution is required. 4+ years of experience in Theme Park Design Presentations is preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
