STATE OF CALIFORNIA, DEPARTMENT OF PARKS & RECREATION Lifeguard II (Seasonal) in Petaluma, California

This position is responsible for the daily leadership of Lifeguard I (seasonal) employees and works under the supervision / leadership of the Lifeguard (permanent) staff and/or State Park Peace Officer, Supervisor (Ranger). The reporting location for this position is Angel Island SP. The Lifeguard II (seasonal) may work at other locations in the district as needed. Each Lifeguard II (seasonal) will be assigned a direct supervisor (LGSI or LGSI Limited Term (LT)). Routine requests for assistance and work-related directions will be made by contacting the direct supervisor. Matters of urgency or of a timely nature may be directed to the Lifeguard (permanent) staff. Direct supervisors will be notified in writing immediately if the normal chain of command is not followed. The position requires all the duties performed by the Lifeguard I (seasonal) classification and additional duties including routine emergency vehicle and public safety radio operation, leadership of Lifeguard I (seasonal) staff, and more complex tasks outlined in the following sections.The Lifeguard II (seasonal) works outdoors and performs vehicle patrol and assists boat operators as a deckhand on trips across the San Francisco Bay. Typically works during daylight based on the ferry schedule, which dictates visitation to the island. May work in a variety of weather conditions, including inclement weatherand may berequired to assist aboard a vessel on rough seas. Must be prepared to enter cold water and swim or paddle long distances in the San Francisco Bay.

Successful completion of the Department of Parks and Recreation seasonal lifeguard training program prior to appointment.

Possession of (1) a Department of Parks and Recreation First Responder certificate or equivalent and (2) a Department of Parks and Recreation Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Red Cross Professional Rescuer or equivalent certificate. An approved Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician certificate or equivalent certificate may be substituted for both the required certificates. Applicants who do not possess these certificates will be admitted to the examination, but they must produce evidence of the certificates before they can be considered for an appointment. Must have the equivalent to three months of experience performing the duties of a lifeguard in other than swimming pools.

Willingness to work as a Deckhand on State Park vessels. Required to enroll in the U.S. Coast Guard drug testing program, which includes a pre-employment drug screening and random drug testing. This is required of all Angel Island State Park employees.

Must possess the following: Willingness to work long and irregular hours, weekends, and holidays; tact and diplomacy; dependability; maturity sufficient to assume the responsibility of protecting lives of others; willingness to conform to prescribed uniform standards.

Physical strength, endurance, and agility necessary to perform lifesaving activities; visual acuity and hearing in each ear sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.

Must have a Valid CA drivers license.

Must demonstrate the following knowledge and abilities: Knowledge of: First-aid procedures and resuscitation methods, surf, ocean, lake, and river swimming, bathing, and boating hazards; first-aid and rescue equipment, and their proper use and maintenance; advanced first-aid practices and resuscitation methods. [Ability to: Swim at a level sufficient to perform lifesaving activities; read and write English at a level appropriate to the class; learn and apply standard first-aid procedures and resuscitation methods; follow directions; remain alert; analyze situations accurately; think and act quickly and take command in emergencies; establish and maintain good working relations; communicate effectively; lead and train seasonal staff; and plan work schedules and assignments.
