This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in competitive swim classes by teaching the four competitive strokes related to competitive swimming. Creates positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist instruction of a group of swimmers (10 or less) ages 6-8; 9-12 and 13-18, in one lane for one (1) to one and half (1 ½ ) hours lesson in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.

  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.

  • Responsible for organized class management ensuring all swimmers can be seen at all times during practice session. Utilize time management techniques ensuring swim time for every swimmer is maximized. Keeps sessions moving smoothly from one activity to the next.

  • Conveys instruction in alignment with appropriate age group. Ensures swimmers understandings of instruction.

  • Uses teachable moments to discuss character development and provides constructive feedback during practice session using positive motivation techniques.

  • Ensures lessons begin and end as scheduled. Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).

  • Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.

  • Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.

  • Utilize equipment appropriately with activities and incorporate skill development. Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Clean up pool deck after each session. Reports damaged equipment.

  • Ability to accommodate alternative dates for pre-team classes in the event of pool closure.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification and Emergency Oxygen.

  • Previous experience working with children preferably in aquatic setting

  • Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.

  • YMCA Swim Instructor or American Red Cross Certification.

  • Previous experience working with diverse populations preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions. Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in accordance to swim instruction. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Must have the ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques. Ability to lift equipment, and lift a small to average size child.
