Logan Health Pharmacy Technician 3 - Inpatient in Whitefish, Montana

Job Description Summary:

The Certified Pharmacy Technician 3 must be able to perform the tasks stated in the Certified Pharmacy Technician 2 job description, as well as the additional duties given in the technical competencies outlined below. These duties require an in-depth knowledge of pharmacy practice, allowing independent functioning within the limits dictated by the Montana State Board of Pharmacy. The main distinction of this position is in the individual’s ability to provide higher level IT and clinical support to all pharmacy staff. This includes support relating to barcode technology, in-depth knowledge of automated dispensing cabinets, knowledge of common computer applications (i.e.: MS Word, Excel, etc.), and has demonstrated continued growth in the pharmacy field by way of certification or another recognized area of expertise.

Performs duties related to medication storage and maintaining medication integrity. Performs duties related to drug supply procurement. Performs duties relating to the preparation of sterile compounded and extemporaneous products. All procedures are under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.

  • Regularly inspects and removes outdated or otherwise unusable pharmaceuticals from all areas of the hospital; maintains log of dates that inspections are done.

  • Maintains log of temperatures of all refrigerators used in hospital to store pharmaceuticals.

  • Prepares "return" medications to pharmaceutical companies for refund.

  • Orders supplies and maintains appropriate supply inventory.

  • Participates in department Quality Assurance and Drug Usage Evaluation programs.

  • Refills Automated Dispensing Machines twice daily. Maintains integrity of their inventory.

  • Prepares and submits wholesaler orders.

  • Checks and prices incoming merchandise and marks invoices for payment; sends invoice to business office; places merchandise into stock.

  • Prepares IV additives, total parenteral nutrition and other IV solutions as needed.

  • Compounds extemporaneous products as needed.

Performs duties related to interdepartmental stocking and charges.

  • Reconciles transactions from the various departments in the hospital; charges for items used and replaces as needed.

  • Prepares take home medications for the Emergency Department stock.

  • Charges for refill medications and medications used in the radiology department.

  • Picks up items to be returned to the pharmacy department from applicable nursing units and delivers drugs to nursing units.

  • Prepares unit dose packages of bulk stock drugs.

  • Answers telephone.

Performs duties related to Medication Reconciliation.

  • Establish good rapport with all local pharmacies.

  • Develop formal written communication with all health care providers to request the most accurate medication list possible.

  • Enter accurate medication lists in the health information system and note discrepancies to the on duty pharmacist for review.

  • Interview the patient and confirm correct medication list and that patient is taking them correctly.

  • Interview the patient to determine if OTC medications or herbal supplements are being taken.

  • Contact the physician’s office for assistance in obtaining an accurate medication list.

  • Track daily and weekly Medication Reconciliation Histories completed.

Supply Chain Management

  • Assist the director of pharmacy in inventory/formulary management of the current health information system.

  • Maintain up-to-date NDC list, removing inactivated NDC’s and adding new NDC’s to the drug dictionaries to maintain adequate scanning and proper billing.

  • Design, maintain, and train pharmacy staff on inventory management system and assist staff with appropriate inventory management techniques.

Additional Clinical Duties

  • Assist in the development and annual record keeping system for IV aseptic technique competencies.

  • Assist with automated dispensing cabinet maintenance and updates.

  • Maintain outpatient dispensing software program to meet all state legal requirements and continual process improvement.

  • Troubleshoot and solve problems independently as they arise.

  • Monitor appropriate billing and reimbursement for high cost IV medications/infusions and assist with process improvement to maximize financial reimbursement.

  • Maintain up to date on current practice standards for pharmacy technicians and assist with development of new opportunities at

  • North Valley Hospital to improve patient care.

Other duties as assigned

  • Assist with the 340B Program tasks and audits.

  • Attends and/or completes mandatory training regarding organizational compliance.

Education and Experience Requirements

Requirements:

Education: High School Degree or equivalent. National Pharmacy Technician Certification, State of Montana Pharmacy Tech License in good standing, Current CPR or AHA BLS certification or ability to obtain within 2 months of hire. Active and engaged member of a nationally recognized pharmacy organization demonstrating commitment to maintaining the most up to date standard of care.

Experience: Five years of pharmacy technician experience, preferably in hospital practice, literacy with MS Office applications, strong organizational skills and detail oriented, ability to troubleshoot and solve problems independently, proficiency in use of computer, typing, and accurate data entry skills. Basic knowledge of the 340B Drug Pricing Program is preferred.

Logan Health operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Schedules are set to accommodate the requirements of the position and the needs of the organization and may be adjusted as needed.
